MARY PIPER HANSEN

Founder and CEO

Mary has been an editor and writer since 1995. She began her career in Boston, earning an MA in writing and publishing from Emerson College, and shortly thereafter began pursuing jobs at Boston-based educational publishers. She wrote and developed content and multimedia for several large publishing houses, such as Pearson Education and McGraw-Hill, and was an original team member of a Boston-based startup that produced among the first digital interactive textbooks for the higher education market. This startup experience sparked Mary’s passion for writing and developing content for students in the digital environment.

In 2010, Mary founded Piper Content Partners (formerly Piper Editorial), bringing together the most sought-after content professionals in the field to become the publishing and edtech industry’s go-to team for clear, engaging, and pedagogically sound learning experiences.

Mary lives in North Carolina with her family and their giant Bernedoodle, Moose. She travels with her family and friends every chance she gets, and loves scuba diving, gardening, reading, hiking, kayaking, and watching the latest addictive show. (She’s taking recommendations.)

If I weren’t a CEO I would be: an undercover agent, a police detective, or a comedy club owner. The creation process with funny people in any medium that makes people laugh, lightens their outlook, and makes everyone feel connected through shared experiences and commiseration would be a dream job. Sitting around laughing with funny friends is a slice of heaven for me.

My morning routine is: coffee, coffee, coffee; meditate; say good morning to everyone I love, either in person or on text; plan out my day; and then dig in to work! On a good morning there is also some form of exercise, but I’m great at thinking of reasons for why it should happen later.

I most admire: people who are considerate of others’ viewpoints and feelings. Those are the smartest people.

My superpower is: keeping calm and staying positive when life gets intense.
